It is also closely tied to the Remington family of industrialists, who funded the church, its 1890 chapel and several Tiffany memorial windows.","narrative":"Located at the corner of Second and West Streets in Ilion, this red brick Methodist church was built between 1864 and 1866 on a cut stone basement. Architect John Hose of Watertown gave it a central engaged bell tower, round-arched windows, stepped pilasters and a bracketed cornice, features typical of the Early Romanesque or Northern Italianate style. It replaced a union church the Methodists had shared with Universalists. Industrialist Philo Remington led the building committee, and the church opened in January 1866 with its $21,000 cost fully subscribed. Seating about 700, it has a sanctuary with ornate painted plasterwork and six memorial stained glass windows, four of them by Tiffany Studios. In 1890 the Remington Memorial Chapel was added, echoing the original design. A 1959 education wing and gymnasium were attached later. The church reflects Ilion's post-Civil War prosperity and the philanthropy of the Remington family.","period_of_significance":"1864-1928","architect_builder":"John Hose (architect); Eben Cowles & Son (builders)","architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a religious facility; a 1959 education wing and gymnasium attached to the chapel are non-contributing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.523718-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/03000601.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03000601/062ffd00a5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03000601/062ffd00a5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:IlionNY_FirstMethodistChurch.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:IlionNY_FirstMethodistChurch.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318126","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_United_Methodist_Church_(Ilion,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5453990"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/herkimer-county/first-united-methodist-church-03000601/"}
