It was built in 1925 by Gilbert A. Saunders.","why_significant":"The building was the only theater in the Mecklenburg County area for over two decades and was closely tied to the community, which rallied to keep it open in the 1930s. It is an excellent example of a 1920s theater and office building in Southside Virginia, with revenue-producing office and meeting space typical of early 20th-century theater design.","narrative":"Built in 1925 by local businessman Gilbert A. Saunders, this three-story brick building in downtown South Hill combined a theater with a post office storefront, second-floor offices and a Masonic meeting hall on the top floor. Its clipped corner, bracketed eaves, stone tablets and patterned red brickwork make it the tallest structure downtown and a visual gateway to the main thoroughfare. Inside, ceramic tile floors, wood paneling, pressed tin ceilings, a molded proscenium arch and original metal seats survive. The theater began with vaudeville and music productions, then showed silent and modern films, and it was the only theater in the area for more than twenty years. When it faced closure in 1932, public support kept it open, and Saunders remodeled it in 1933. During World War II it offered free admission for scrap iron. The Y.M.C.A. moved in during 1948 after a competing theater opened. The Saunders-Montgomery family owned it until 2001.","period_of_significance":"1925-1948","architect_builder":"Gilbert A.
