It is roughly bounded by 10th Street North, Arlington Boulevard and North Irving Street.","why_significant":"The district holds one of Arlington County's largest concentrations of high-style suburban Colonial Revival buildings from 1918-1945. It also illustrates early suburban growth through bungalows, American foursquares, kit houses and garden apartments. The description notes its community house, park and small commercial core.","narrative":"Lyon Park is a residential neighborhood of about 284 acres in central Arlington County, Virginia, roughly two and a half miles from Washington, D.C. Frank Lyon subdivided the first section in 1919 into some 1,200 lots of about fifty feet in width, set around a central park and community house site. He kept adding sections to the east, south and west until 1951. Houses range from Queen Anne dwellings of the 1900s and Craftsman bungalows of the 1920s to American foursquares and at least sixteen mail-order kit houses. Brick Colonial Revival houses and Cape Cods from the 1930s and 1940s dominate, giving the area one of the county's strongest concentrations of suburban Colonial Revival buildings from 1918 to 1945. Garden apartment complexes, including the 1932 Irving Apartments and the Lee Gardens complex designed by Mihran Mesrobian, line the borders. The district also contains two churches, a 1925 community house, a park and a small commercial core.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Frank Lyon (developer); Mihran Mesrobian (architect of Lee Gardens apartments)","architectural_style":"Queen Anne; Colonial Revival; Tudor Revival; Bungalow/Craftsman","criteria":[],"status_note":"The community house, built in 1925, continues to serve the Lyon Park Community Association.
