Westlake Avenue in the Pico-Union area of Los Angeles, built circa 1904 as the West Coast residence of Edward Alexander Kelley Hackett.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an outstanding, well-preserved example of the late Shingle style blended with Queen Anne and early Craftsman features. It records how the Arts and Crafts movement spread across the United States and took hold in early Los Angeles. Many original interior features survive.","narrative":"This two-and-a-half story, shingle-clad house at 1317 S. Westlake Avenue in Los Angeles dates to about 1904 and is believed to be the first house built on its block of Westlake Avenue. It was the West Coast home of Edward Alexander Kelley Hackett, a Fort Wayne, Indiana newspaper editor and publisher, who first used it as a winter retreat before settling there with his wife and five children. The design joins Shingle, Queen Anne and early Craftsman elements, with an asymmetrical facade, intersecting gables, bay windows and a porch with scrollwork arches. Inside, original wallpaper, light fixtures, hardware, woodwork and hardwood floors remain, along with built-in bookcases and pocket doors. Additions in 1909, 1918 and 1943 did not disturb its integrity. The house was listed for its architecture, as one of the most intact residences of its type in the Pico-Union neighborhood and an example of the Craftsman style's early development in Los Angeles.","period_of_significance":"1901","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Craftsman","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a multiple dwelling; the form notes some deferred maintenance, with a pergola and garage in poor condition, but the house's architectural integrity is intact.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:28.071032-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/03000428.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03000428/480c6bcfec-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03000428/480c6bcfec-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Los Angeles","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edward_Alexander_Kelley_Hackett_House,_Los_Angeles.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edward_Alexander_Kelley_Hackett_House,_Los_Angeles.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123859172","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Alexander_Kelley_Hackett_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14681906"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/los-angeles-county/hackett-edward-alexander-kelley-house-03000428/"}
