The buildings were erected mainly between 1891 and about 1930.","why_significant":"The district is argued to be the strongest commercial reflection of the arrival of the railroad in 1890, which founded the town as a shipping and commerce center. It is also significant for its large, cohesive group of standard late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century commercial buildings, including several with individual distinction designed by Benton and Benton of Wilson. It is regarded as significant at the local level.","narrative":"Along Main Street in downtown North Wilkesboro, a row of thirty-five buildings, most of them two stories, forms the town's densest commercial core. The town was founded in 1891 as the western terminus of the Northwestern North Carolina Railroad, and its brick stores were built in rapid succession uphill from the depot. Most of the district was built between 1891 and about 1930, giving it a homogeneous character. Standard commercial buildings share segmental or round-arched windows with brick hood molds and layered corbeled cornices. Several buildings stand out for their design. The 1892 former Bank of North Wilkesboro at 901 Main Street has terra cotta decoration, and 823 Main Street has a pressed metal facade from before 1904. Benton and Benton of Wilson designed three buildings: the 1923 former bank at 832 Main Street, the 1926 Hotel Wilkes at 830 Main Street, and the 1939 former Town Hall at 801 Main Street. The district is valued for its architecture and for its role as the area's commercial center through the mid-twentieth century.","period_of_significance":"1891-1952","architect_builder":"Benton and Benton Architects (Charles C. and Frank W.)","architectural_style":"Commercial Style; Classical Revival; Romanesque Revival; Moderne; Neo-Classical Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Buildings are in good to excellent condition; most first-story storefronts have been remodeled, and some metal facades have been removed.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:41.948519-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/49/7228/47722849/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/03000392.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03000392/cdc5b098b5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03000392/cdc5b098b5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Ceh2624","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NorthWilkesboroDowntown.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Ceh2624</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NorthWilkesboroDowntown.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722849","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downtown_Main_Street_Historic_District_(North_Wilkesboro,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5303496"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/wilkes-county/downtown-main-street-historic-district-03000392/"}
