It is a well-preserved two-room schoolhouse in DuPage County that served part of York Township until 1961 and was a hub of community activity. Frank O. Butler donated the land and funded its construction.","narrative":"Built around 1921 on the northwest corner of 31st Street and Spring Road in Oak Brook, Illinois, Butler School is a red brick schoolhouse in the Georgian Revival style with Federal details. It has a symmetrical front, a pedimented entrance wing with a fanlight, modillioned cornices, and side wings flanking a central block. Frank O. Butler, a local landowner and dairy operator, donated ten acres and paid for the two-classroom building to replace the one-room Rabbit Hill and Torode schools. Grades one through four met in one room and grades five through eight in the other, while the basement served as an auditorium, gym and meeting space. The school stayed open until 1961 and drew about 52 pupils a year on average. It also hosted a community club with dances, suppers, plays and sports. Its listing recognizes its place in local education history, and it remains an intact example of a small rural schoolhouse in DuPage County. The architect is unknown.","period_of_significance":"circa 1921-1953","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival; Georgian Revival","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Now used as village offices and storage and for museum purposes; the interior has been remodeled at least three times but retains its original floor plan.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.494892-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/93/8927/28892793/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/03000355.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03000355/65b3f4cd15-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03000355/65b3f4cd15-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Teemu08 at en.wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ButlerSchoolOakBrook.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Teemu08 at en.wikipedia</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ButlerSchoolOakBrook.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28892793","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butler_School_(Oak_Brook,_Illinois)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5002646"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/dupage-county/butler-school-03000355/"}
