It repeated and improved on the success of Ring's earlier Colonial Village. It reflects Garden City planning ideas and the housing demand created by growth in the federal workforce.","narrative":"Arlington Village is a planned garden apartment community built in 1939 on about fifty-three acres along Columbia Pike in Arlington County, Virginia. Developer Gustave Ring and architect Harvey Warwick laid out 656 apartment units in rowhouse-style brick buildings with Colonial Revival details, organized into five superblocks around courtyards, green space and parks. Four standard building designs with flat, gable or gambrel roofs were repeated throughout, which kept construction costs down and rents affordable for middle-class workers. A six-store shopping center on Columbia Pike repeats the Colonial Revival styling. A swimming pool, pool house and two tennis courts were added in 1971. The village was Ring's second large rental project in the county, following Colonial Village, and applied the Garden City ideals of working with the land's contours. It is significant as an example of 1930s apartment development driven by growth in federal employment. Exteriors and floor plans remain largely as designed.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Harvey Warwick (architect); Gustave Ring (developer)","architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals/Colonial Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still in residential use as multiple dwellings, with a small shopping center; exteriors largely retained, with some vinyl replacement windows and other minor alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.849447-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/18/6796/41679618/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/03000215.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03000215/de43bf9eb3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03000215/de43bf9eb3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Granby01","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:After_the_Rain_Comes_the_Sun_in_Arlington_Village.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Granby01</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:After_the_Rain_Comes_the_Sun_in_Arlington_Village.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679618","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arlington_Village_Historic_District_(Arlington,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16088478"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/arlington-county/arlington-village-historic-district-03000215/"}
