The farm complex, with its two 1897 Wells truss barns, pig sty/corn crib and smokehouse, illustrates the evolution of nineteenth-century farming in the northern Genesee Valley.","narrative":"Set on a rise above the Genesee Valley in Wheatland, this 26-acre farmstead centers on a cobblestone house begun in 1838 by Isaac Cox, a Quaker settler who prospered growing wheat and running mills. The house has a two-story, five-bay center block with three-bay wings, small uniform cobbles laid in horizontal rows, cut stone trim, and finely crafted Federal woodwork inside. Cox designed it as a double house, with two apartments sharing a central stair hall. Behind it stand two gambrel-roofed Wells truss barns from 1897, an earlier barn with a pig sty and corn crib from about 1892, and a reconstructed smokehouse. A short section of the original cobblestone wall survives along River Road. Together the buildings show how farming changed through the nineteenth century, including the rise of dairying. The house is also regarded as an outstanding example of cobblestone construction in New York State.","period_of_significance":"1838-1897","architect_builder":"Isaac Cox (builder); Wells barns developed by John Talcott Wells, Sr.","architectural_style":"Early Republic: Federal (vernacular late Federal cobblestone)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The house was abandoned after a 1962 sale, then rehabilitated by a later owner from 1966 onward; it is now a single dwelling and the land remains in agricultural use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.646687-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/03000092.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03000092/3308e4ec70-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03000092/3308e4ec70-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"rogerhogle","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Isaac_Cox_Cobblestone_Farmstead_2012-09-20_17-40-51.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">rogerhogle</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Isaac_Cox_Cobblestone_Farmstead_2012-09-20_17-40-51.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313563","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isaac_Cox_Cobblestone_Farmstead","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14706563"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/monroe-county/cox-isaac-cobblestone-farmstead-03000092/"}
