The Park Service developed it in its present location in 1929.","why_significant":"The nomination argues Camp 4 was the physical and social center of modern rock climbing from 1947 to 1970, the so-called golden age of Yosemite climbing. Climbers who lived there invented big wall climbing and developed new techniques and equipment. It qualifies under Criterion A in the area of Recreation/Entertainment.","narrative":"Camp 4 is a campground of about five to six acres on the floor of Yosemite Valley, north of Northside Drive and just west of Yosemite Lodge. The National Park Service developed it in 1929 as the Valley's first winter campground and picnic area. From 1947 to 1970, it became the home base for the climbers who pioneered big wall climbing on the Valley's granite cliffs. Residents included Royal Robbins, Warren Harding, Yvon Chouinard, Chuck Pratt, and Jim Bridwell. Climbers favored it because it was the only all-season campground in the Valley, received early sunlight, and offered excellent bouldering. It served as a place to plan ascents, share equipment and information, and debate climbing ethics. Several climbing-related businesses grew from this community. The site includes the campground's large boulders, such as Columbia, Wine, Pratt, and Kor Boulders, which serve as landmarks. A comfort station and five search and rescue tent cabins were added after 1970 and do not contribute to its significance.","period_of_significance":"1947-1970","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Still a campground and climbers' gathering place; the form notes a deteriorated, non-functioning electrical substation near its southeast corner and post-1970 additions including a comfort station and five search and rescue tent cabins.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.74033-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/03000056.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03000056/247edbccdb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03000056/247edbccdb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Diliff","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Camp_4,_Yosemite_NP,_CA,_US_-_Diliff.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Diliff</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Camp_4,_Yosemite_NP,_CA,_US_-_Diliff.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"04001159","name":"Yosemite Valley","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/california/yosemite-valley-04001159/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123859733","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camp_4_(Yosemite)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2935203"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/mariposa-county/camp-4-03000056/"}
