Kent Street in Winchester, Virginia, built in 1895 beside the railroad tracks. It is added to the Winchester Historic District through a boundary increase of about one acre.","why_significant":"The mill was the first textile mill built in Winchester and the only cotton manufacturing facility in the region, since other local mills produced woolen goods. It adds the area of Industry, otherwise not represented in the district. It also keeps a well-preserved Late Victorian commercial/industrial design and is the only surviving textile-related industrial building in downtown Winchester.","narrative":"Built in 1895 beside the railroad tracks on N. Kent Street in Winchester, the Lewis Jones Knitting Mill is a two-story, five-bay brick building on a rubble stone foundation, with a metal roof and a long roof monitor. Corbelled brick cornices and pilasters divide its sides into bays. Albert Baker of Winchester and Lewis Jones, Sr. of Philadelphia founded the company to produce cotton underwear and hosiery and to provide local employment. It was the first textile mill in Winchester and the only cotton mill in the region, where other mills made woolen goods. Additions followed in 1912, 1927 and 1948, including a north wing and a southern warehouse. Manufacturing ended in the 1960s, and the first floor now houses a safety glasses assembly business. The owners of the mill declined inclusion when the Winchester Historic District was drawn in 1979. The building was later added because it represents the industrial theme and is the only surviving textile-related industrial building downtown.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Commercial Vernacular","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Parts of the building are in use: the first floor and parts of the north wing house a tenant assembling safety glasses. The basement and second floor are unused, and the rear sections are condemned. The northeast part of the north wing is in ruinous condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.634905-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/62/6841/41684162/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/03000054.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03000054/2b02033ec7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03000054/2b02033ec7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"AgnosticPreachersKid","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_Frederick_County_Courthouse_1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">AgnosticPreachersKid</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_Frederick_County_Courthouse_1.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"80004318","name":"Winchester Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/winchester-historic-district-80004318/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41684162","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winchester_Historic_District_(Winchester,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16903512"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/winchester/winchester-historic-district-boundary-increase-03000054/"}
