Its small scale, elongated form, narrow porch and orientation toward the nearby Delaware and Hudson Canal reflect the link between farming and transportation. It is a rare surviving remnant of Wurtsboro's canal-era agricultural history.","narrative":"This small farmhouse at 59 First Street in Wurtsboro, Sullivan County, was built between about 1820 and 1850 as the home of Lawrence and Maria Masten. It began as a three-bay, one-and-one-half-story wood-frame dwelling with a large fieldstone and brick chimney, and was soon enlarged by an addition on the north side. A narrow porch faces east toward the Delaware and Hudson Canal, which crossed the family's 100-acre farm. The Mastens, descendants of an early Basher Kill Valley landholder, gave the canal company a right-of-way and gained access to markets in Ellenville, Kingston and Port Jervis. The farm ceased operating in 1948 and its land was sold off, but the house survives on a half-acre lot with old trees and views of the Shawangunk Mountains, along with a relocated chicken house. It was listed for its architecture as a typical, well-preserved canal-era farmhouse and a rare reminder of the area's agricultural past.","period_of_significance":"c1820-1850","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"no style","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a single-family residence; the original 100-acre farm has been subdivided and the house is surrounded by modern housing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.737249-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/03000046.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03000046/3851904d12-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/03000046/3851904d12-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Masten-Quinn_House,_Wurtsboro,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Masten-Quinn_House,_Wurtsboro,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322395","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masten-Quinn_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6784906"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/sullivan-county/masten-quinn-house-03000046/"}
