It also meets the criteria consideration for religious properties with architectural significance. It is the congregation's third church on the same site.","narrative":"Standing at the corner of Sixth and Plum Streets, one block north of the Clark County Courthouse, this Marshall, Illinois church is built of gray limestone laid in alternating smooth and rusticated courses. Its asymmetrical plan includes a square bell tower, a smaller pyramidal-roofed tower, a double-arched entrance loggia, a large rose window and many stained glass windows. Inside, dark oak pews, trim and reredos fill the sanctuary, and the original bell, cast in 1850, still hangs in the tower. The Gray Construction Company of St. Louis built it in 1908 for $17,985, covering only the shell, and the congregation raised the remaining funds through grants, loans and community meals and bazaars. It was dedicated in 1909 on the site of two earlier churches. It is recognized for its architecture as the first Richardsonian Romanesque building in Marshall and a good local example of the style.","period_of_significance":"1908","architect_builder":"Gray Construction Company, St. Louis, Missouri","architectural_style":"Romanesque/Richardsonian Romanesque","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in religious use as a church; roof re-covered with asphalt shingles in 2001 and finials being replaced with copper crosses.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.537627-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/60/8918/28891860/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/02001753.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001753/6459cf4fb7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001753/6459cf4fb7-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:First_Congregational_Church_in_Marshall.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:First_Congregational_Church_in_Marshall.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28891860","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Congregational_Church_(Marshall,_Illinois)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5452810"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/clark-county/first-congregational-church-02001753/"}
