At 80 feet in diameter it is the second largest round barn among those Illinois examples listed in the National Register, behind only the Ryan Round Barn. Despite its relocation, the form says it keeps good integrity and is one of the best preserved round barns in Illinois.","narrative":"Built in 1913-1914 for farmer Charles E. Lewis near Camp Point, Illinois, this two-story round barn measures 80 feet across and rises to a 60-foot double-hip roof topped by a cupola. Local contractor Lambert Huber built it, using lumber sawn on site from an adjacent wooded lot, at an estimated cost of $2,000. Inside, an 18-foot silo enclosed in cypress staves stands at the center, surrounded by posts supporting an open hayloft. The barn once held 100 to 150 cattle and later sheltered cattle and hogs. In 1999 the Lewis family donated it to a local not-for-profit association, which moved it to the Adams County Fairgrounds to save it from deterioration. A reconstructed cupola and added bracing were part of the work. It is significant as a round barn tied to scientific farming ideas, and it ranks second in diameter among Illinois round barns listed in the register. It now displays early farm tools and machinery.","period_of_significance":"1914","architect_builder":"Lambert Huber, Builder","architectural_style":"Other: Round Barn","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Moved in 1999 to the Adams County Fairgrounds, where it now houses an exhibit of primitive agricultural tools and turn-of-the-century farm equipment; the cupola was reconstructed and interior bracing added.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.237744-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/75/8916/28891675/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/02001750.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001750/e33956fad2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001750/e33956fad2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Robb01","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lewis_Round_Barn_-_Adams_County_Fairgronds_Mendon,_IL.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Robb01</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lewis_Round_Barn_-_Adams_County_Fairgronds_Mendon,_IL.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28891675","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_Round_Barn","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14687785"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/adams-county/lewis-round-barn-02001750/"}
