It contains 26 resources, mostly houses built between about 1819 and 1941.","why_significant":"The district holds the most cohesive collection of pre-Civil War houses in Lincolnton, along with later nineteenth and early twentieth-century dwellings. It includes some of the best local examples of the Federal and Greek Revival styles, complemented by Colonial Revival, bungalow and period cottage houses. Eighty-three percent of its primary resources contribute to its historic and architectural character.","narrative":"Two tree-lined blocks of West Main Street in Lincolnton, plus one house on North High Street, make up a district of modest-scale houses just west of the Lincoln County courthouse square. The lots follow the town's original 1780s plan. Most of the fifteen primary buildings from the period of significance, about 1819 to 1941, are one-and-a-half or two stories, and most are frame. Shadow Lawn, built in 1826 in the Federal style, and the ca. 1854 temple-form William H. Michal House show the district's early architecture, while the unusual ca. 1842 Houser-Hildebrand House combines a brick first story with a projecting frame second story. Later houses include a 1920s bungalow, two Colonial Revival houses and a ca. 1941 period cottage. Several buildings from the 1960s through about 1980, including the public library, are noncontributing. The district was listed because it preserves a concentrated view of Lincolnton housing from the early nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1819-ca. 1941","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal, Greek Revival, Colonial Revival, Bungalow, Period Cottage","criteria":[],"status_note":"Mostly in residential use, with some commercial buildings and a public library; several frame houses have vinyl or aluminum siding, and two vacant lots remain.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:54.567162-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/68/7210/47721068/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/02001716.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001716/499a23c478-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001716/499a23c478-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Main_west_of_Government,_Lincolnton.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Main_west_of_Government,_Lincolnton.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721068","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Main_Street_Historic_District_(Lincolnton,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q22061130"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/lincoln-county/west-main-street-historic-district-02001716/"}
