The town was laid out in a grid in 1873, and the district holds buildings from the 1860s to the 1950s.","why_significant":"The district is significant under criteria for commerce and architecture. It preserves a largely intact collection of houses, stores, a church and outbuildings that reflect the growth of the community, especially the late-nineteenth-century building boom that followed the arrival of the Norfolk and Southern Railroad in 1881.","narrative":"Winfall is a small railroad town northeast of Hertford in Perquimans County, North Carolina, laid out on a grid in 1873. The historic district covers about twenty acres along Main Street and nearby side streets, with 73 contributing and 29 noncontributing resources. Most are one- and two-story frame houses built after the Norfolk and Southern Railroad arrived in 1881, many with Victorian sawnwork brackets, turned porch posts and spindle friezes. Later Craftsman, Colonial Revival and period revival houses show continued growth into the twentieth century. Modest frame commercial buildings cluster near the tracks, including the c. 1893 White Store, now a post office. Epworth United Methodist Church, a Gothic Revival building from about 1903, is the only church in the district. Sheds, garages and kitchens stand behind many houses. The district was recognized for its architecture and its role in the commerce of a railroad community between 1860 and 1950, and for retaining its overall historic character.","period_of_significance":"1860-1950","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Queen Anne; Bungalow; Colonial Revival; Ranch Style; Gothic Revival church","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Residential area with houses, a post office in the former White Store, and one church; the railroad depot is no longer extant. Most contributing resources are single-family dwellings, many used as rentals.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:54.003144-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/42/7217/47721742/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/02001715.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721742","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winfall_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q22061150"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/perquimans-county/winfall-historic-district-02001715/"}
