It was expanded and updated in a Greek Revival renovation around 1830.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an outstanding regional example of Federal style residential architecture in western Greene County. It gains added interest from its Greek Revival alterations, especially the recessed Ionic-columned entry. It also reflects the wealth of the Strong family and recalls the early development of Ashland.","narrative":"Built around 1797 on the north side of NY 23 at the western edge of Ashland, this two-story timber frame house has a five-by-two bay form, a stone foundation and a gable roof with a finely crafted cornice that forms full pediments at the ends. About 1830 a major renovation added an elaborate Greek Revival entrance with a paneled surround, Ionic fluted columns, sidelights and a one-and-one-half story rear wing. Inside, a central hall keeps its delicate Federal stair, and the west parlor has an early Greek Revival mantel. The kitchen retains its original cooking fireplace and baking oven. The house is tied to Elijah Strong, a farmer, hotelkeeper and church deacon, whose father Elisha Strong settled much of the land that became Ashland. It was listed as an outstanding regional example of Federal architecture, with Greek Revival alterations, that retains a high degree of integrity. Restoration of the original clapboards was underway when it was nominated.","period_of_significance":"ca.1797-ca.1835","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal; Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a single dwelling; the form describes an ongoing restoration, including uncovering original clapboards beneath mid-twentieth century synthetic siding.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.433276-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/02001711.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001711/b502bf6034-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001711/b502bf6034-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"RobertDrake2015","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Elijah_Strong_House_5-14-2016.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">RobertDrake2015</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Elijah_Strong_House_5-14-2016.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318053","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elijah_Strong_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5360998"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/greene-county/strong-elijah-house-02001711/"}
