The original dogtrot-plan section dates to the mid-1790s, with a masonry addition from the early 19th century.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is significant under Criterion C for architecture, as one of only a few known dogtrot-plan buildings in the Winchester-Frederick County area, a plan more typical of the lower Midwest and South. It shows two building campaigns, the later enclosing the breezeway and adding a kitchen wing. The lot is a remnant of a 466-acre farm within the Second Kernstown Battlefield.","narrative":"Homespun is a long, narrow farmhouse on one acre along Cedar Creek Grade, on the line between Frederick County and Winchester, Virginia. The oldest part, built in the mid-1790s, has two log pens separated by an open breezeway, a dogtrot plan found in only a few buildings in this area and more usual in the lower Midwest and South. The breezeway was later enclosed to form a central passage, and in the early 19th century a two-story stone and brick addition with a kitchen was built at the east end. A continuous roof ridge unites the sections. A stone smokehouse stands to the rear and appears on an 1858 survey. The house was built under Godfrey Miller's ownership and later passed to the Miller and Bell families. The property is a remnant of a 466-acre farm within the Second Kernstown Battlefield. It was listed for its architecture, representing a rare regional example of its plan type and its two construction periods, ca. 1795 to ca. 1825.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1795 to ca. 1825","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic; Other: Dogtrot plan","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as work in progress, commercial.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.798465-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/92/6807/41680792/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/02001671.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001671/d57bafebb5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001671/d57bafebb5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"AgnosticPreachersKid","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Homespun_(Winchester,_Virginia)_1.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">AgnosticPreachersKid</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Homespun_(Winchester,_Virginia)_1.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680792","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homespun_(Winchester,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712567"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/frederick-county/homespun-02001671/"}
