It is also tied to the Sherwood family, which included lawyers, a journalist and etiquette author, painters, and playwright Robert Emmet Sherwood, a multiple Pulitzer Prize winner.","narrative":"Sherwood Family Estate occupies 222 acres on the west side of the Delaware River, one mile south of Delhi, New York. Samuel Sherwood acquired the original parcel in 1801, and the main house was built about 1804. It began as a five-bay, two-story center block with low flanking wings. A long rear wing was added in 1842, the side wings were raised and enlarged, and early twentieth-century trim such as modillions, dentils and an Ionic portico was added to the facade. The grounds hold an ice house, laundry, garage and spring house, along with stone walls, remnants of formal gardens, a clay tennis court, a park and cultivated fields once used as orchards. One later sap house does not contribute to the district. The estate is listed for its architectural and landscape development from 1801 to about 1925 and for its long ownership by the Sherwood family, whose members included lawyers, painters, writers and the Pulitzer-winning playwright Robert Emmet Sherwood.","period_of_significance":"1801-c1925","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic/Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling with secondary structures and gardens; a carriage house and a privy are lost, though their sites are documented.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.650702-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/02001648.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317267","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherwood_Family_Estate","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7495519"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/delaware-county/sherwood-family-estate-02001648/"}
