It is significant under Criterion C as an intact example of a fraternal hall building type. It is now a rare survivor of its kind, noted for an unusually high degree of architectural integrity, including a second-floor meeting room that remains as it was in 1894.","narrative":"Built in 1894 in the rural hamlet of Halsey Valley, this two-and-one-half-story frame building served as the meeting hall of Hagadorn Post #505 of the Grand Army of the Republic, a Civil War veterans' organization, and the Sons of Veterans camp that helped build it. The post, formed in 1884, had previously rented rooms in local hotels. The hall keeps its original clapboard siding, two-over-two windows and main entrance doors, and electricity was the main addition, in 1937. Downstairs hangs a lithograph of Andersonville Prison. The second-floor auditorium retains beaded-board walls, a star-decorated ceiling, an altar table, officers' chairs, perimeter benches, and wall displays of portraits, maps, flags and photographs. Heated by stoves, it is still used by the Sons of Union Veterans and their Auxiliary. It is listed for its social history role and as a rare, highly intact example of a fraternal meeting hall.","period_of_significance":"1894-1952","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"No style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a meeting hall by the Sons of Union Veterans and its Auxiliary, who meet there regularly; the building has no running water and is heated by coal or wood stoves.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.51534-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/02001646.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001646/782b66b472-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001646/782b66b472-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Dmadeo","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Grand_Army_of_the_Republic_Hall,_Halsey,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Dmadeo</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Grand_Army_of_the_Republic_Hall,_Halsey,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322439","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Army_of_the_Republic_Hall_(Halsey_Valley,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5594254"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/tioga-county/halsey-valley-grand-army-of-the-republic-meeting-hall-02001646/"}
