It now serves as a museum.","why_significant":"The building is a rare surviving example of vernacular Georgian stone masonry in the Schoharie Valley. During the Revolutionary War it formed the core of the \"Lower Fort,\" a stockaded refuge for settlers from 1778 to 1785, and it withstood an attack led by Sir John Johnson and Joseph Brant in October 1780. It has housed the county historical society's collections since 1888.","narrative":"Built in 1772, this two-story stone church on Fort Road in Schoharie was raised by local settlers under master mason John Schuyler. Its walls use stone from several local quarries, with dressed ashlar on the east front, a modillion cornice, round-arched windows and a separate square tower. During the Revolutionary War the building was enclosed by pickets and became the \"Lower Fort,\" one of three forts protecting valley families from Loyalist and Indian raids between 1778 and 1785. On October 17, 1780, a force of about 800 led by Sir John Johnson and Joseph Brant attacked it, and a scar in the west wall is traditionally attributed to a cannonball. The congregation left in 1844. New York State bought the building in 1858 and used it to store arms until 1873, when it passed to Schoharie County. Since 1888 the county historical society has kept it as a museum of regional artifacts. It is the only surviving building tied to the Lower Fort and is a rare Georgian-influenced stone church in the valley.","period_of_significance":"1772-1889","architect_builder":"John Schuyler (builder)","architectural_style":"Colonial/Georgian","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Used as a museum and library storage by the Schoharie County Historical Society; the form states it retains substantial integrity of design and materials.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:54.103007-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/02001643.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001643/5864bb79ae-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001643/5864bb79ae-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Adam Lenhardt","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_Stone_Fort_11Mar2008.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Adam Lenhardt</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_Stone_Fort_11Mar2008.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100003624","name":"Schoharie Village Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/schoharie-village-historic-district-100003624/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321759","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Stone_Fort_(Schoharie,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7085110"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/schoharie-county/old-stone-fort-02001643/"}
