It was built for the Lockwood Lodge No. 653 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the hall is architecturally significant as an intact representative example of fraternal hall plan and design in Hunter. It has a public first-floor dining and assembly room with kitchen, and a secured second floor with anterooms and a ceremonial room. It also reflects the importance of beneficial fraternal groups at the turn of the century.","narrative":"Built as the permanent home of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows in Hunter, this two-and-one-half-story wood frame hall sits on a stone foundation beneath a steeply pitched gable roof. Clapboards and shingle imbrication cover the exterior, and the letters IOOF are picked out in contrasting shingles in the front gable. Inside, the building follows the traditional fraternal plan: a first-floor dining and assembly room with pressed tin walls and ceiling and a rear kitchen, and a second floor holding anterooms and a ceremonial room behind a secured stair hall. The original wood stove, doors and trim remain. The local lodge was first organized in 1848, disbanded in the mid-nineteenth century, and re-established in 1892 as Lockwood Lodge No. 653. Membership declined by the 1960s, and the building was later sold. It is now an antique shop but remains largely unchanged, and it is valued as a well-preserved example of its building type.","period_of_significance":"1913","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Queen Anne","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Highly intact from its original construction; currently used as an antique shop.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.301919-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/02001642.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001642/4f15eaf2f4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001642/4f15eaf2f4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Albany, New York, United States","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:IOOF_Hall_Hunter_NY_May_11.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Albany, New York, United States</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:IOOF_Hall_Hunter_NY_May_11.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317982","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOOF_Hall_(Hunter,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5972889"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/greene-county/ioof-hall-02001642/"}
