It was built circa 1849 and remodeled in 1891.","why_significant":"The building is significant under Criterion C as an intact example of rural vernacular church architecture. It keeps the form and proportions of a Greek Revival meeting house, overlaid with Late Victorian Gothic and Stick style changes made in 1891. It retains most of its nineteenth century fabric and remains a landmark in the hamlet.","narrative":"Set on a slight rise above Union Valley Cross Road, this small timber-frame building began as the Union Valley Congregational Church around 1849. It is a front-gabled meeting house, three bays wide and three deep, with clapboard walls, a stone rubble foundation and a slate-clad belfry. The original Greek Revival lines survive, particularly the plank floors, molded trim and rear elevation. In 1891 the congregation remodeled the church in the fashion of the day, adding Gothic pointed windows, stained glass, a new bell tower, an entrance hood and Stick style woodwork. Such updates were common among small rural congregations that could not afford new buildings. Services ended in 1938, when the last living member deeded the building to the Congregational Conference of New York. It later passed to a local cemetery association and now serves as a community house, hosting meetings, suppers and children's activities. Its high integrity makes it a clear record of the hamlet's nineteenth century architecture.","period_of_significance":"c. 1849-1891","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival; Late Victorian: Gothic","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a community house for meetings, Harvest Suppers and children's activities; owned and maintained by a local charitable aid society.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.139697-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/02001639.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001639/9e948bd2a8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001639/9e948bd2a8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:UNION_VALLEY_CONGREGATIONAL_CHURCH,_CORTLAND_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317175","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Valley_Congregational_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7886382"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/cortland-county/union-valley-congregational-church-02001639/"}
