It sits beside the railroad and served as a general store.","why_significant":"It is one of only two historic Main Street commercial buildings left in Climax and an excellent example of an early 1900s free-standing brick commercial building in South Georgia. It is also significant for commerce as a general store that served the town and rural area and housed the post office from 1905 until the 1930s.","narrative":"Built in 1903 beside the railroad on Main Street in Climax, Georgia, this one-story brick building served for decades as the town's general store. Its front has a corbelled parapet, two bay display windows with original transoms, cast-iron columns and a recessed entrance with original double doors. Inside, one large room keeps its plaster walls, wood floors and ceiling, and floor-to-ceiling shelves with ladder rails. Brothers Ira Albert Allen and Walter Samuel Allen ran the Allen Mercantile Company here until 1916, selling dry goods, groceries, hardware and farm supplies. The Climax post office occupied the back of the store from 1905 until the 1930s. After the brothers' bankruptcy, John P. Herring operated the store, and Inez Allen later reopened it, keeping it open into the 1960s. It is one of only two historic Main Street commercial buildings remaining in Climax, and it is largely unchanged inside and out. The building is now vacant.","period_of_significance":"1903-1952","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as vacant/not in use; the store operated until the mid-1960s.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.987963-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/02001632.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001632/3b95f0e47c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001632/3b95f0e47c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jud McCranie","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Allen_Mercantile_Company,_Climax,_GA,_US.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jud McCranie</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Allen_Mercantile_Company,_Climax,_GA,_US.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207720","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allen_Mercantile_Company","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16159394"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/decatur-county/allen-mercantile-company-02001632/"}
