It also retains an unusual amount of original interior fabric, including varied woodwork and original hardware. It is also tied to the Black family, early pioneers in Pickaway County.","narrative":"Salt-Pick Farm, also called the Joseph Black Farmhouse, is a two-story, L-shaped brick house on Heffner Road near Circleville in Pickaway County, Ohio. Built about 1835, it is a vernacular building with traces of Federal and Greek Revival influence. Its common bond brick was made from clay on the property and fired on site, and the walls rest on a hand-cut limestone foundation. Scalloped corbeling runs beneath the cornice, and the entrance porch is carried on unusually large, plain stone columns. Inside, the house keeps a central hall, a wide staircase, walnut woodwork that varies from room to room, five fireplaces and its original hardware. Joseph Black came from Pennsylvania in 1811 and bought the land in 1814. His brother William, a carpenter and contractor who helped build much of Circleville, including the first courthouse, likely assisted with construction. The house was listed for its craftsmanship, its intact interior and its distinctive stone porch.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"William Black","architectural_style":"Vernacular, with traces of Federal and Greek Revival influences","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; a rehabilitation by the owners was underway at the time of the form.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:13.009213-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/02001459.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990895","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":null},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/pickaway-county/black-joseph-farmhouse-02001459/"}
