The property also sits on the site of Ward's Tavern, an ordinary begun by John Ward around 1772, and retains a tavern, grist mill, dam, cemetery and mansion ruins.","narrative":"Locust Hill is a farm complex on a gentle rise south of the Staunton River in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Its main house is a two-and-a-half story frame Victorian cottage with a Swiss Gothic character, steep gables trimmed in ornamental bargeboard, and two central chimneys. Local craftsman Enoch Johnson built it for Samuel Marion Stone between 1859 and 1861, and a rear addition followed around 1930. Stone chose the site of Ward's Tavern, an ordinary started by John Ward around 1772, dismantled the tavern and moved its parlor nearby. The property still holds a tavern, a late eighteenth century grist mill and dam, a servants' quarter, a caretaker's house, livestock barns, a family cemetery and the remains of Ward's earlier mansion. Several outbuildings were restored or altered in the later twentieth century, but the complex retains good overall integrity. It was listed for the distinctive architecture of the house and the survival of its secondary structures.","period_of_significance":"1859 - 1952","architect_builder":"Enoch Johnson","architectural_style":"MID 19th CENTURY: Victorian (Swiss Gothic)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in residential use as a single dwelling; the form describes the house and outbuildings as well maintained and in good integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.904406-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/58/6825/41682558/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/02001449.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001449/2a269e33ae-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001449/2a269e33ae-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Locust_Hill_farmhouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Locust_Hill_farmhouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682558","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locust_Hill_(Hurt,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15242611"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/pittsylvania-county/locust-hill-02001449/"}
