It cites the heavy Doric corner pilasters, deep entablature, pedimented gable roof and an elaborate tower with Doric pilasters and Corinthian columns. The site has also housed a Presbyterian congregation since its first sanctuary was built in 1799.","narrative":"Peekskill Presbyterian Church, at South and Washington streets in Peekskill, New York, is a white clapboard Greek Revival church completed in 1846. It replaced an earlier 1799 sanctuary on land given by Nathaniel Brown. The one-story building has a stone foundation, Doric corner pilasters, a full entablature and a pedimented gable roof. A four-stage tower contains the entrance and rises through a clock stage, a belfry and an octagonal drum with Corinthian columns to a spire. Large thirty-six-over-thirty-six windows line the sanctuary. Later additions came in 1858, 1884 and 1964, and interior remodelings followed in 1892 and 1922. The grounds include the early nineteenth-century Fowler House, now church offices, and a small Brown family cemetery with markers dating from 1799. The builder is unknown, but the work is considered skilled. The church was recognized for its architecture as an outstanding local example of Greek Revival religious design, and it remains an active place of worship.","period_of_significance":"1799-1922","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Mid 19th Century: Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a church; the Fowler House serves as the church office.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.402959-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/02001400.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001400/66b2c1b3f0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001400/66b2c1b3f0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Peekskill_Presbyterian_Church.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Peekskill_Presbyterian_Church.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"04000095","name":"Peekskill Downtown Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/peekskill-downtown-historic-district-04000095/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75323159","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peekskill_Presbyterian_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7160185"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/peekskill-presbyterian-church-02001400/"}
