It was built in 1823 as a combined schoolhouse and house of worship.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is significant under Criterion A in education because it reflects rural life and the difficulty of securing schooling in a remote community in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Under Criterion C it represents a nearly forgotten method of log construction. It is described as the last of the pre-Civil War log field schools in the area, and perhaps in Virginia.","narrative":"Hamilton Schoolhouse is a one-room log building of hand-hewn yellow-poplar with half-dovetail corners, built in 1823 beside South Buffalo Creek southwest of Lexington. Robert Hamilton conveyed about an acre to trustees so the community could have a house of worship that doubled as a school. It served mostly as a school, supported by limited Literary Fund money and local effort, and became part of the state system in 1870. It closed in 1928. The building also worked as a community center, voting precinct, militia drill ground, Sunday school site and a burial ground for poor white and Black families. Its door and walls held posted court notices, and many nail holes remain. Limewashed log walls, pine ceiling boards, original pews and a podium survive inside, with no plumbing or wiring ever installed. Its rarity as an early log field school and its high integrity are the basis for its recognition.","period_of_significance":"1823-1928","architect_builder":"unknown (tradition credits William H.
