The circa 1800 hall-and-parlor section retains early construction features, and the circa 1842 addition by Jeremiah McMullan, a Methodist circuit-riding preacher, is in the Greek Revival style. It retains very good integrity.","narrative":"Near Stanardsville in Greene County, Virginia, this two-story frame house sits on a stone foundation at the foot of Saddleback Mountain, with the South River crossing the property frontage. Its oldest section, built around 1800, was a hall-and-parlor dwelling with beaded weatherboards, beaded interior sheathing fastened with wrought rosehead nails, pit-sawn timbers and mortise-and-tenon joinery. Around 1842, Jeremiah McMullan, son of an early local settler and later a Methodist circuit-riding preacher, more than doubled the house and gave it Greek Revival trim, including a wide cornice band, an entry porch and a transomed paneled door. A store is said to have operated in the house, and a later owner ran a tannery on the property until about 1900. The two building periods remain readable, and the front facade looks much as it did in 1842 apart from the standing seam metal roof. It was listed for its architecture as a vernacular Blue Ridge dwelling.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1800-1952","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Georgian; Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a single dwelling; described as retaining very good architectural integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.927477-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/17/6810/41681017/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/02001367.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001367/9bd8145951-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001367/9bd8145951-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Powell-McMullan_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Powell-McMullan_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681017","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powell%E2%80%93McMullan_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713090"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/greene-county/powell-mcmullan-house-02001367/"}
