Pawling.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a substantially intact, representative example of a late nineteenth century community meeting hall (Criteria A and C). It was a philanthropic gift from mill owner Henry H. Pawling to his workers and the community. It has remained the focus of local social and civic life for over a century.","narrative":"Pawling Hall is a two-story brick meeting hall on Pawling Street in the village of Hagaman, Montgomery County, New York. Completed in 1891, it was paid for by Henry H. Pawling, owner of the Star Mill, as a gathering place for his textile mill workers and the wider community. The gabled building has a front divided into three recessed panels by brick pilasters, a corbeled brick frieze, segmental-arched windows and a blind oculus under the gable. Inside, a large first-floor hall retains beaded wainscoting and a beadboard ceiling, and a stage was added soon after construction. A turned-balustrade staircase leads to the upper floor. The hall hosted musical and literary evenings, dance classes and dramatic performances, drawing audiences from Amsterdam. A Grange bought it in 1938, and the village purchased it in 1972. It still serves as a polling place, meeting hall and village offices, and its long public use and high integrity underpin its significance.","period_of_significance":"1891","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Continues in use as a polling place, community meeting hall and village government offices; village officials are considering a restoration program.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.596665-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/02001331.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319036","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pawling_Hall","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7156269"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/montgomery-county/pawling-hall-02001331/"}
