Reed. It now houses the Alexandria Bay Chamber of Commerce.","why_significant":"The building is significant in Architecture as a vernacular interpretation of Richardsonian Romanesque, a style popular for civic buildings of the period, and it retains its original form, windows and fabric. It is also significant in Education for serving the community as a library for almost 100 years.","narrative":"Built in 1899 at 7 Market Street in Alexandria Bay, this two-story hipped-roof building was constructed of local red sandstone laid in random rubble. It replaced the village library founded in 1877, whose collection was lost when the Westcott Block burned in 1894. Local residents raised funds for the new building, and hotel owner George C. Boldt bought the lot and served as president of the library board. J.B. Reed, a local architect/builder, gave it a vernacular Richardsonian Romanesque design with large Syrian stone arches across the first story, stone lions flanking the entry steps, stained glass transoms and original woodwork inside. The library served the community for almost 100 years, adding a neighboring house for extra space in 1970. In 1998 the library moved to Walton Street, and the building became the home of the Alexandria Bay Chamber of Commerce. It retains a high level of architectural integrity and remains a prominent public building in the village.","period_of_significance":"1899 - 1952","architect_builder":"J.B.
