Surviving stones date from 1814 to about 1910.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is one of the earliest European-American settlement-period community cemeteries in western New York and the last above-ground remnant of the vanished village of Williamsburg. It also holds the graves of prominent Genesee Valley figures, including members of the Carroll and Fitzhugh families and abolitionist presidential candidate James G. Birney.","narrative":"Tucked into farmland and second-growth forest off Abel Road in Groveland, this small cemetery is all that remains above ground of Williamsburg, the first village founded in the region by land agent Captain Charles Williamson in 1792. The village declined and eventually disappeared, but the burial ground survives, marked on an 1794 survey map. Its stones, dated from 1814 to about 1910, include obelisks, marble tablets, a coffin-shaped granite marker and a carved sheaf of wheat. The cemetery holds the graves of Charles Carroll and William Fitzhugh, early investors and settlers who were partners of Nathaniel Rochester, along with family members active in the courts, Congress and banking. James G. Birney, an abolitionist nominated for president by the Liberty Party in 1840 and 1844, is also buried here. An unadorned stone for \"Mamma Rachael\", presumed to be a Carroll family servant, adds to the story of early settlement.","period_of_significance":"1792-ca 1910","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","B"],"status_note":"The cemetery and its stones are described as in generally good repair, with an iron picket fence of early twentieth-century appearance.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.429283-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/02001328.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001328/41ab4b3132-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001328/41ab4b3132-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WILLIAMSBURG_CEMETERY,_LIVINGSTON_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318700","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Williamsburg_Cemetery","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8021158"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/livingston-county/williamsburg-cemetery-02001328/"}
