It is also described as an outstanding local example of Tudor Revival applied to a large commercial building, and a visual landmark in the city streetscape.","narrative":"Built in 1899 at the corner of Main Street and Clinton Avenue in Kingston, this four-story wood frame hotel is a large Tudor Revival building with steeply pitched intersecting gables, decorative half timbering, clapboard and stucco walls, and an engaged corner tower that holds the entrance and stair hall. It replaced a former lumberyard. Mrs. Margaret S. Conklin ran it until 1917, and several later owners operated it as a hotel, restaurant and bar. Hotel rooms closed in 1968 and the restaurant and bar in 1972, the year the original wraparound porch, balcony and tower roof were removed. The interior remains largely intact, with original doors, moldings and plaster, and a finely crafted stair. The property was listed for its architecture. It is described as the best surviving example in Kingston of a large wood frame urban hotel, and as a distinctive local example of Tudor Revival used on a commercial building. It remains a recognizable landmark in the uptown streetscape.","period_of_significance":"1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals/Tudor Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed in the form's current function as vacant; the hotel operations ceased in 1968 and the restaurant and bar closed in 1972.
