Cowen, with a rear ell added about 1900.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an excellent example of a pre-Civil War plantation plain-type house that retains its historic design, craftsmanship and materials. Few antebellum plantation plains survive in the growing metropolitan Atlanta region, and this one has a high level of integrity. Significance is local and rests on architecture alone.","narrative":"Built around 1854 on Cowan Road in Acworth, this two-story frame house was the home of Stephen D. Cowen, a yeoman farmer who moved from Jackson County, Georgia, and eventually held a farm of nearly 600 acres. It follows the plantation plain form, a variation of the I-house, with a two-story main block, a central hall, four principal rooms, and a shed-roofed rear ell. Classical Revival details include corner boards, a wide entablature and a double-leaf entrance with sidelights and transom. A one-story rear ell with kitchen and dining room was added about 1900. The house retains its hewn, braced frame, weatherboard siding and plain interior finishes. Such houses were built in Georgia mostly between 1820 and 1850, and few survive near Atlanta. The surrounding farmland and outbuildings have been lost to development, leaving 2.62 acres. The house is being rehabilitated as a welcome center and museum.","period_of_significance":"1854-c.1900","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Other: Plantation plain, I-house (with Classical Revival-style elements)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Being rehabilitated by a local historical society for use as a welcome center, museum and historical society offices; the front porch is missing and the floorboards of the two second-floor bedrooms have been removed.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.337375-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/02001299.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001299/f080ca467d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001299/f080ca467d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Nilesrob","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StephenCowan.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nilesrob</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:StephenCowan.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207575","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134287845"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/cobb-county/cowen-stephen-d-house-02001299/"}
