It keeps its original front-gable form, central tower, floor plan and plain wood interior. Its pointed-arch windows are uncommon among Georgia's small-town and rural Baptist churches, which tend to be unornamented or simple classical designs.","narrative":"Whitesburg Baptist Church is a small, one-story, wood-frame church on a prominent lot on Main Street in Whitesburg, Carroll County, Georgia. Built in 1875-1876, with first services held in June 1876, it follows the familiar small-town Baptist form of a front gable with a central tower holding the entrance, belfry and steeple. Pointed-arch windows and a multi-paned pointed-arch window above the double front doors give it a Gothic Revival character that was uncommon for rural and small-town Baptist churches in Georgia. Inside, the original wood walls, ceiling, floors and door and window surrounds survive, along with the original plan of foyer and sanctuary. The congregation began as New Providence Baptist Church and took the Whitesburg name in 1875 after its earlier building burned. Later changes include stained-glass windows in 1973, a 1980 baptistery mural by local painter Jack Ashmore, and a fiberglass steeple in 1987. The church has remained active and is a community landmark.","period_of_significance":"1875-1876","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still an active church congregation in use as a religious facility; changes include a 1969 rear addition, stained-glass windows added in 1973, and a fiberglass steeple added in 1987.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.609872-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/02001220.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001220/a0d31c1ea3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001220/a0d31c1ea3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Blastoids","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Whitesburg_Baptist_Church.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Blastoids</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Whitesburg_Baptist_Church.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207245","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q126722016"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/carroll-county/whitesburg-baptist-church-02001220/"}
