It was built about 1895, apparently by W. C. Chapman.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an excellent and highly intact example of the two-story Georgian House type in a small-town setting. It keeps its original form, floor plan, chimneys, stone piers, porch, doors, windows, stairway and mantels. It also housed two generations of a locally prominent family.","narrative":"Built around 1895 on Broad Street in Crawfordville, this two-story frame house with an attic follows the Georgian house type: a central hallway with two rooms on each side, repeated on the upper floor. It has a flat-topped hipped roof, weatherboard siding, a full-facade two-story porch with square Doric columns, and eight fireplaces with wood mantels apparently made by millwork companies. A two-room cook's kitchen is attached at the rear. The house was built by William Colclough Chapman, known locally as \"Chapman the Grocer,\" who ran a downtown grocery for many years. It later passed to his daughter, Mary Lela Steed, who taught in public schools for forty-two years. The house was listed for architecture because it is a clear, well-preserved example of its type, with little applied ornament and most original materials intact. It is considered significant at the local level. The family sold it in 1991, and it remains a single-family home.","period_of_significance":"c.1895","architect_builder":"W.C.
