James Story built it, and it sits on about 80 acres with outbuildings.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a good, largely intact example of a Greek Revival Georgian cottage built as the main house of an antebellum cotton plantation. Its rigorous symmetry, precise north-south orientation, and four identical porticos made it unusual for the area. Two original outbuildings, the kitchen and cook's house, survive as remnants of a larger group of support buildings.","narrative":"Set on a small hill at the end of a long gravel drive in rural Harris County, Georgia, this one-story Greek Revival cottage was built around 1840 by planter James Story as his home and the headquarters of a cotton plantation worked by enslaved labor. Modest in size, it follows a Georgian cottage plan with four identical rooms off a central hall and matching porticos facing the four compass points. Original heart-pine floors, shutters, doors, mantels and hand-hewn braced framing survive. A kitchen and cook's house from the same period and a c.1920 barn remain, along with the graves of James and Lany Story. In 1906 the Hadley family bought the house, and it stayed with them until 1977, with cotton grown until the boll weevil destroyed the crop in the 1920s. It was listed for its architecture, as a good and intact example of its type and style.","period_of_significance":"c.1840-1952","architect_builder":"James Story","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival; Other/Single Pen; Other/Georgian Cottage","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Current function is single-family dwelling; it was renovated in 1978 with two rear side additions, and the owners have since done little to alter it.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.641805-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/02001217.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001217/73d978f6b0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001217/73d978f6b0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Rivers Langley; SaveRivers","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Story-Hadley_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Rivers Langley; SaveRivers</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Story-Hadley_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93208633","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134365026"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/harris-county/story-hadley-house-02001217/"}
