The house keeps almost all its original features and is executed uniformly in the Tuscan order with high-quality workmanship. It gives a glimpse into architectural practice in central Virginia around 1850.","narrative":"Winterham is a two-story frame house crowning a hill above the pastures of Amelia County, Virginia. Built around 1855 for John Garland Jefferson II, it follows an Italian Villa design with a cross-hall plan, a hipped roof on deep bracketed eaves, white poplar weatherboards and porches including an octagonal-bayed veranda. Inside, the finish is consistently Tuscan in order, with ogee-curved moldings on baseboards, architraves, chimneypieces and door panels. The design came from Jefferson's cousin Thomas Tabb Giles, an attorney and amateur architect, with structural drawings signed by Richmond architect and engineer William Percival. It is the only known Virginia building by either man, and the original drawings survive. The house stayed in the Jefferson family until 1972 and served as a Confederate hospital in 1865. A restoration beginning in 1999 added a basement and a porch, while the principal rooms remain largely unchanged. A late nineteenth-century farm building and an early twentieth-century garage also contribute to the property.","period_of_significance":"1855-1949","architect_builder":"William Percival; Thomas Tabb Giles","architectural_style":"Italian Villa","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"A complete restoration began in 1999, adding a basement and a fifth porch; the form lists current function as work in progress and single dwelling.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:01.236575-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/2/6795/41679502/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/02001183.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001183/4ace10fba0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001183/4ace10fba0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Ser Amantio di Nicolao","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Winterham_plantation_house,_now_a_bed_and_breakfast.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ser Amantio di Nicolao</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Winterham_plantation_house,_now_a_bed_and_breakfast.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679502","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winterham_(Winterham,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713548"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/amelia-county/winterham-02001183/"}
