It is significant under Criterion C for the range of locally distinctive architecture from the mid-nineteenth through mid-twentieth century, including work by H. C. Park and J. P. Marston.","narrative":"Ridgway's historic district covers 252 acres of downtown and nearby residential streets in Ridgway, the county seat of Elk County. Of its 802 unlisted resources, 729 are counted as contributing, most built between 1890 and 1930 and many in brick commercial blocks along Main and Broad Streets. The district's importance rests on two grounds. Its 1879 Court House and Jail, designed by J. P. Marston, anchors county government, which was centred here throughout the period of significance. The district also holds a large body of work by the Hyde-Murphy Company, a firm that produced architectural millwork and art glass and also built houses, churches and commercial blocks. Its in-house architect, H. C. Park, is well represented. Together, the buildings show the range of architectural styles popular from about 1850 to 1952, from Greek Revival and Italianate to Bungalow and Art Deco.","period_of_significance":"c. 1850-1952","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival, Italianate, Gothic Revival, French Second Empire, Romanesque Revival, Neo-Classical Revival, Colonial Revival, Late Gothic Revival, Bungalow, American Foursquare, Art Deco","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":null,"vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:36.816065-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/02001180.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001180/b4921be6bf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001180/b4921be6bf-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ridgway_Historic_District_Jun_09.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog (talk)</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ridgway_Historic_District_Jun_09.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71997994","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ridgway_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7332887"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/elk-county/ridgway-historic-district-02001180/"}
