It is also a front-gabled Greek Revival building with Doric pilasters, a full entablature and cornice returns, a type identified as significant in the Clinton multiple property documentation.","narrative":"Built around 1846, this two-story, wood-frame store at 7846 Main Street in Clinton, Ohio, was erected for Solomon Sorrick, a local grain merchant. Henry Oster later ran it as a grocery and provisions shop, and it also functioned as a saloon. Later uses included a harness shop, a millinery, a post office, another grocery and a residence. Its front-gabled Greek Revival form includes four Doric pilasters, a full-length entablature, cornice returns and a recessed central door flanked by large windows. A rear addition was probably added around 1859-1860. Clinton was a busy Ohio & Erie Canal port with several provision stores serving canal travelers, but a fire in 1909 destroyed most of its wood-framed commercial buildings. The Oster Store is the only canal-era commercial building still standing in the village. It was recognized for its role in local commerce and for its architecture, and the form notes it was vacant and being rehabilitated at the time.","period_of_significance":"1846-1884","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival (front gabled)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed as vacant/not in use; the form states the building is being rehabilitated.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:06.859921-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/02001123.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001123/b61c636d7e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02001123/b61c636d7e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SORRICK-OSTER_STORE,_CLINTON,_SUMMIT_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71986278","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138714840"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/summit-county/sorrick-oster-store-02001123/"}
