About 120 acres remain.","why_significant":"The nomination argues Longwood is an excellent, well-preserved rural example of domestic Greek Revival architecture (Criterion C). It has the low-pitched hipped roof, prominent cornice and recessed sidelit doorways typical of the style. It also has uncommon features: Italianate brackets and an original two-story full-facade porch.","narrative":"Longwood is a two-story frame house on a raised brick basement, built around 1859 by lawyer George Loyall Gordon near Gordonsville in Louisa County, Virginia. It began as a 630-acre working farm with barns, stables and outbuildings, and about 120 acres remain today. The house follows the Greek Revival style, with a low-pitched hipped roof, a prominent cornice, symmetrical three-bay front, recessed doors with sidelights, and a center-hall plan with simple mantelpieces and a curved stair. Large Italianate brackets under the cornice are an unusual addition for rural Virginia. Its original two-story full-width porch was also a rare form, though the porches have since been lost and restoration is planned. Gordon died at Malvern Hill in 1862, and his family held the property until 1921. The designer is undocumented, though local tradition points to builder Benjamin Faulconer. The house was listed for its well-preserved architecture and rural setting.","period_of_significance":"1859-1952","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a single dwelling with agricultural outbuildings. The original front and rear porches are gone, and the owner plans to restore them from historic photographs.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.701974-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/85/6816/41681685/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/02000998.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000998/a222d93bb2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000998/a222d93bb2-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Longwood_near_Gordonsville.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Longwood_near_Gordonsville.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681685","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longwood_(Gordonsville,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712744"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/louisa-county/longwood-02000998/"}
