The core buildings date from c. 1830 to c. 1840 on earlier 18th-century foundations.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the farmstead is significant under Criterion A for its association with settlement and agricultural development along the East Branch of Little Antietam Creek from the late 18th century through 1950. Under Criterion C it is significant for its surviving building group, especially the rare and intact octagonal stone smokehouse and the log secondary house with its roughcast finish. The main house is treated as non-contributing because of later additions.","narrative":"Located in the Roadside area of Washington Township, the Handycraft Farmstead is a fourteen-acre complex on the north bank of the East Branch of Little Antietam Creek, east of Waynesboro. Its buildings include a hewn timber frame Pennsylvania bank barn dated to about 1840, a hewn log secondary house of about 1830 with a stucco finish scored to look like cut stone, and a distinctive octagonal stone smokehouse of about 1830. The farm was part of a 251-acre tract patented in 1776 and was progressively subdivided through the nineteenth century, when it served as supplemental income for successive owners. The property is valued for its association with that agricultural history and for its group of buildings, particularly the smokehouse, which is considered rare and well preserved. A spring-fed pond in the south yard remains a central feature of the grounds.","period_of_significance":"c 1790 1950","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Pennsylvania or Swisser style bank barn; hewn log construction","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The secondary log house is unoccupied and in deteriorated condition; the barn continues to be used for hay and grain storage.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:36.448238-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/02000893.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000893/c541e2628e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000893/c541e2628e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ M.D.","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ M.D., CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HANDYCRAFT_FARMSTEAD,_WASHINGTON_TWP,_FRANKLIN_COUNTY,_PA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71998546","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handycraft_Farmstead","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5647735"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/franklin-county/handycraft-farmstead-02000893/"}
