It was built about 1770 as a 1 1/2-story gambrel-roofed timber-framed house and remodelled in the Italianate style in 1868.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is one of only two surviving timber-framed 'witness' buildings from the 1777 Battles of Saratoga in the Schuylerville area. It served as a British field hospital and as a refuge for the Baroness de Riedesel and others during a cannonade. It is also a rare surviving pre-Revolutionary house in Saratoga County that shows its evolution to 1868.","narrative":"Just north of Schuylerville, this farmhouse began around 1770 as a 1 1/2-story, heavy timber-framed building with a gambrel roof, set on a fieldstone foundation. In 1868 it was raised to two full stories and remodelled in the Italianate style, with clapboard siding and a wraparound porch, while the original center-hall plan, wide plank floors and hewn basement joists were kept. Its importance comes chiefly from October 1777, when British forces under General Burgoyne held a fortified line nearby after the Battles of Saratoga. The house served as a British field hospital. Baroness Fredericka de Riedesel and her three children sheltered in its stone basement while American batteries fired on the building, and she described the ordeal in letters published in 1800. The bloodstained parlor floor and recovered cannonballs remain. Only one other timber-framed building from that period is identified in the Schuylerville area, which makes this house a rare surviving witness to the campaign.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1770-1868","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial; Late Victorian/Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed as a residence, with residential use continuing.
