Allen & Company of Chattanooga built it in 1935 for Southern Dairies, with additions in 1945 and 1951.","why_significant":"It is significant in architecture as a good, intact pre-World War II industrial building in the Art Deco style. Its exposed steel, reinforced concrete and metal truss structure shows a shift in Atlanta building technology. It is also significant in industry for its link to Atlanta's growing dairy processing business and a large national dairy corporation.","narrative":"Built in 1935 at Glen Iris Drive and North Avenue in Atlanta, this yellow brick industrial building was constructed by Allen & Company of Chattanooga for Southern Dairies, Inc. It has a three-story tower with the company's \"SD\" emblem, pilasters dividing the bays, herringbone and stepped brick patterns, and large metal windows. A one-story garage stands beside it, and additions followed in 1945 and 1951. Inside, steel posts, concrete beams and metal trusses remain visible in an open plan now used for offices. The building is recognized for its Art Deco styling and for showing the move from load-bearing masonry and timber to steel and reinforced concrete. It also represents the rise of milk processing in Atlanta. In 1935 it was one of only four processing plants in the metro area, and by the mid-1950s the company was the largest dairy in Georgia. The plant operated until 1998.","period_of_significance":"1935-1956","architect_builder":"Allen & Company-builders","architectural_style":"Modern Movement/Art Deco","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Now used as office space; the interior keeps its original open plan and visible structural systems. Two later coolers have been removed. The plant operated until 1998.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.997202-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/02000872.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000872/1d81416913-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000872/1d81416913-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Brogers784","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Southern_Dairies_-_Seen_From_North_Ave_-_March_2013.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Brogers784</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Southern_Dairies_-_Seen_From_North_Ave_-_March_2013.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93208344","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Dairies","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7569855"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/fulton-county/southern-dairies-02000872/"}
