Tall basement windows rising about five feet above ground make it look like three stories. Wide eaves with paired brackets, cast iron window pediments and cast iron balconies are typical of the style. Inside, original woodwork, hardwood floors, mahogany stair railings, cast iron fireplaces and a large pocket door survive. The house sits on about two acres with outbuildings from 1867, including a brick washhouse, wooden barn, brick wood storage house, four-hole privy and a children's playhouse. Later changes include replacement windows around 1950, a rebuilt rear porch in 2000 and a modernized kitchen in 1999. It was listed for its architecture, as a well-preserved example of Italianate design in Mercer County. The architect and builder are unknown.","period_of_significance":"1867","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition and still in use as a single dwelling, with repairs and alterations made in 1999-2001.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.791821-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/23/8937/28893723/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/02000846.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000846/b47ddc8ca2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000846/b47ddc8ca2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Josys36","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:James_S._Thomson_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Josys36</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:James_S._Thomson_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28893723","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_S._Thompson_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q20710023"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/mercer-county/thompson-james-s-house-02000846/"}
