Muse and built in 1921.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the school is a good and intact example of an early 20th century Neoclassical community school in a small Georgia town, with few alterations and no additions. It is also significant in education as the only public school for the white children of Metter during the historic period, housing grades one through eleven.","narrative":"Metter High School is a two-story brick school on a large corner lot in downtown Metter, a small town in rural southeast Georgia. Designed by C.C. Muse and completed in 1921, it has a full-height pedimented portico with four Doric columns and two brick pilasters, topped by a wide entablature. Inside, a central hall divides four classrooms on each floor, with plaster walls, tongue-and-groove ceilings and wood floors. The building housed grades one through eleven and was the only public school for the town's white children until a new classroom building was built across College Street after the 1936-37 school year. Later it served for lunch service, vocational classes and piano lessons, and most recently for storage. It was listed for its architecture, as an unusually intact Neoclassical community school with no additions, and for its role in local education. A historical society planned to convert it to a local history museum.","period_of_significance":"1921-1951","architect_builder":"C.C.
