It was the only school for African-American children in Alapaha and the surrounding area, qualifying under Criterion A. It is also a good example of an early 20th-century community school with character-defining features common before 1930, qualifying under Criterion C.","narrative":"Built in 1924 on Henry Street in Alapaha, this two-story frame building served as the school for African-American children in northern Berrien County. Its service area reached the Irwin, Atkinson and Tift county lines. Four rooms held eleven grades, with several grades sharing a classroom, and an upstairs room served as a lunchroom. Heating came from coal-burning pot-bellied stoves tended by students. In 1945 the older students, supervised by the principal, built a one-story rear addition with ribbon-style windows. The school closed after 1953, when Berrien County consolidated Black students into the new Nashville High and Elementary School. The building was later sold to a Masonic lodge, which still uses the second floor as a meeting hall. Its two-story height, wood frame, simple double-hung windows and lack of stylistic detail are typical of Georgia schools built before 1930, and few such buildings survive.","period_of_significance":"1924-1953","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Other/No Style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Used as a meeting hall by a Masonic lodge; a 2001 Georgia Heritage Grant funded rehabilitation for continued lodge and community use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.07738-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/02000758.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000758/29ef4bc0cb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000758/29ef4bc0cb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Bubba73 (Jud McCranie)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alapaha_Colored_School,_Alapaha,_GA,_US.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bubba73 (Jud McCranie)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alapaha_Colored_School,_Alapaha,_GA,_US.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206974","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alapaha_Colored_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q28035257"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/berrien-county/alapaha-colored-school-02000758/"}
