It now serves as a house museum and has a shed and carriage house on the lot.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an especially fine and unusually well-preserved example of late 19th-century residential design in Caldwell. Its symmetrical form, restrained classical detailing and cypress construction set it apart from the town's more ornamented Victorian houses. It is nominated under Criterion C in the area of Architecture at the local level.","narrative":"Built in 1891 on East Buck Street, just east of the Burleson County courthouse square in Caldwell, this cypress-framed house was reportedly a wedding gift from merchant Thomas Kraitchar, Sr. to his son Thomas Jr. and daughter-in-law Mary. It has a side-gabled roof, a central-hall plan, a full-width front porch with slender chamfered columns, and a symmetrical five-bay front with pedimented window trim and a strong cornice. Unlike many Victorian homes of the period, it uses very little applied ornament. The only major change was a bathroom added by enclosing part of a rear porch, probably in the 1920s. The family lived there until 1974, and the Burleson County Historical Society restored it in 1982 as a house museum. It is considered one of Caldwell's finest and best-preserved nineteenth-century residences, valued for its architecture and its high degree of integrity. The builder is unknown.","period_of_significance":"1891","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Occupied by the Kraitchar family until 1974, restored in 1982, and now used as a house museum.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:24.129041-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/13/9714/40971413/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/02000731.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000731/853634ff23-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000731/853634ff23-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D.","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D., CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:THOMAS_AND_MARY_KRAITCHAR_JR_HOUSE,_CALDWELL,_BURLESON_COUNTY,_TX.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40971413","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas,_Jr.,_and_Mary_Kraitchar_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q54871456"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/burleson-county/kraitchar-thomas-jr-and-mary-house-02000731/"}
