It contains dwellings, barns, a mill, bridges, a fountain, and remains of mills, raceways and dams, with 37 contributing resources.","why_significant":"The district reflects 18th and 19th century milling and lumber industry along the creek, including the Kenderdine enterprises and a stone quarry trade. It is also associated with the artist Daniel Garber and with tourism that developed in the early 20th century, and its vernacular stone buildings represent local Colonial, Federal, Greek Revival and Italianate building traditions.","narrative":"Along a narrow stretch of Cuttalossa Creek in Solebury Township, Bucks County, the district contains dwellings, barns, a mill, bridges and the remains of mills and raceways dating from the mid-18th century to 1932. Samuel Armitage built the first mill on the creek around 1748, and the stone Armitage Mill still stands. In the 1830s John E. Kenderdine bought the tavern and mills at the creek's mouth and built a lumber business that gave the village its name, Lumberton. Kenderdine's enterprises included a sawmill, a sash and door factory from 1857, and a grist and plaster mill on the canal. Stone from nearby quarries was shipped to Philadelphia and New York. Floods in 1885 and 1896 ended the valley's milling. Later the valley drew painters and tourists, and the artist Daniel Garber is associated with the district. Its stone and frame buildings are regarded as typical of local vernacular design.","period_of_significance":"1748-1952","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial: Georgian; Early Republic: Federal; Mid 19th Century: Greek Revival; Mid 19th Century: Italianate","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"The landscape and built environment are described as remaining intact with few changes in recent years.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:37.960612-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/02000705.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000705/66786dbe0c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000705/66786dbe0c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Shuvaev","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cuttalossa_Valley_HD_Hard_Times_Tavern_01.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Shuvaev</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cuttalossa_Valley_HD_Hard_Times_Tavern_01.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71998182","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuttalossa_Valley_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5196925"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/bucks-county/cuttalossa-valley-historic-district-02000705/"}
