It was built c1897 by W.E. Yager and enlarged in 1922.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a distinctive late nineteenth century theater that adapted to changing entertainment trends, moving from plays and vaudeville to movies and larger productions. It retains overall integrity to its original form and 1922 expansion, and its 1922 interior design is almost completely intact. It has played a substantial role in the city's history and still offers entertainment.","narrative":"Located at 47 Chestnut Street in downtown Oneonta, this three-story brick building combines a theater with ground-floor storefronts and upper-floor apartments. It was erected in 1897 by local resident W.E. Yager as one of three similar adjacent blocks; the other two were later lost to urban renewal. Leased to W.D. Fitzgerald, the theater opened in 1898 and hosted plays and vaudeville, then added movies in 1913. In 1922 the Shine Company enlarged it, adding a stage house with a 60-foot fly space, dressing rooms, a relocated entrance and a marquee. The auditorium was redecorated with Italianate plaster ornament, a pressed-metal coffered ceiling and a Corinthian-columned stage frame, and this scheme survives almost intact. By the 1940s movies were the main offering. The building was recognized for its architecture and its role in local entertainment and recreation, which continues today. The balconies have been enclosed to create a second screen, but the original 1922 decoration remains.","period_of_significance":"1897-c1940","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th century revivals","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still in use as a theater, now subdivided into two spaces by enclosing the balconies; the change is described as easily reversible.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.812023-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/02000555.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000555/e90cbc7411-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000555/e90cbc7411-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Albany, New York, United States","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Oneonta_Theatre_May_11.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Albany, New York, United States</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Oneonta_Theatre_May_11.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320972","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oneonta_Theatre","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7093724"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/otsego-county/oneonta-theatre-02000555/"}
