Under Criterion C it is significant for its high-style Colonial Revival design, with a classical tripartite facade and fine craftsmanship. It is also one of the few historic buildings left in downtown Norton's civic and commercial core.","narrative":"Rising six stories beside the railroad corridor in downtown Norton, Virginia, this brick and sandstone hotel opened in June 1921 with one hundred rooms. Local businessmen formed the Norton Hotel Corporation and raised the $375,000 construction cost within the community. Architect Thomas Seabrook Brown of Bristol and Washington, D.C., gave it a Colonial Revival design with a classical base, shaft and entablature. The hotel offered private bathrooms and steam heat, luxuries in far southwestern Virginia at the time, and it served coal-industry business travelers and tourists visiting nearby national forests. A fire damaged the sixth floor in 1936, and repairs allowed a reopening that November. The building later declined, and by the 1970s and 1980s it was abandoned and badly deteriorated. The City of Norton purchased it in 1994 and stabilized it with a new steel structure inside the original walls. It is recognized for its role in local commerce and its architecture.","period_of_significance":"1921-1951","architect_builder":"Brown, Thomas Seabrook","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Abandoned and decayed from the 1970s and 1980s; the City of Norton bought and structurally stabilized it in 1994 and was rehabilitating it for economic development at the time of the nomination.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.437023-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/78/6841/41684178/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/02000524.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000524/e1b6021fb5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/02000524/e1b6021fb5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Betcantrell","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hotel_Norton.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Betcantrell</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hotel_Norton.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41684178","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotel_Norton","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15225856"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/wise-county/hotel-norton-02000524/"}
